The one-type-design Turbo-Raven boasts a 750 HP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-25C turbine engine coupled to a Hartzell 3 blade composite propeller. The propeller produced 2,800 pounds of thrust for the 1,600 pound Turbo-Raven. The result is like riding a rocket! Wayne now had the fastest climbing propeller driven airplane in the world. In 1999, Wayne flew the Turbo-Raven to two new World Records. On January 20, 1999, Wayne rocketed the Turbo Raven from brake release to 3,000 meters (9,842.5 feet) in one minute and nine seconds. Later that year, at the Airventure 99 at Oshkosh, WI., Wayne shattered the time-to-climb record to 6,000 meters with a time of three minutes and six seconds.
This photo is a still frame extracted from the footage I shot at the Moffett Field Airshow 1999 (the footage represents the entire airshow performance.) Included are close-up shots of Wayne and the Turbo-Raven prior to performing. You can find the video in our exclusive video library.
