Lt. Rice of the VF-124 Gunfighters performed the hottest minimum radius turn ever recorded at an airshow. The Abbotsford International Airshow was host to many foreign teams and dignitaries in 1986 as part of Expo '86 in Vancouver, BC. If there was one show to pull out all the stops to show the world how great the F-14 Tomcat was, this was it. Lt.
In 1984, Craig Hosking began building "Double Take" in secret. Double Take was a totally unique airshow act- something that the industry needed. The engine was converted to a totally dry sump for continuous inverted flight. His seat belt harness had an electric winch for the upside down take offs and landings. After wowing the crowds with the inverted take offs, aerobatics, and landings, Craig Hosking earned the Art Scholl Award for Showmanship by the International Council of Air Shows in 1988.
Major Bob Wade's CF-18 demo at the Abbotsford International Airshow in 1986 was spectacular. Major Wade pulled off a maneuver that had not been performed at shows and is not done now- the high-alpha 360 degree turn at low level. In 1986, the Canadian Forces were just getting their first CF-18 Hornets and saying goodbye to the CF-101 Voodoo.
The U.S. Navy Blue Angels, flying the A-4 Skyhawks, performed at the 1986 Abbotsford Airshow. This is a clip from the full flight and will be the final part of the full video I'm working on.
The Abbotsford 1997 airshow was loaded with action. Always a great show, 1997 was a non-stop, thrill-a-minute extravaganza with a good balance of military and civilian aerobatic performances. This video is a highlight reel taken from more than twelve hours of footage. Put to music, all the show acts are basically in the order of their scheduled performance.
