B-17 "Memphis Belle" cockpit complete with the Elvis bobble head.
These great aircraft were a product of some of the best aeronautical engineering minds in the world. World Wars generated the need for control over a nations airspace, aerial observation, search and rescue, fighters for defense, and bombers to bring the enemy to their knees. From fabric to metal, these great machines of war are a testimony to the nations, companies, men, and women that assembled them.
Today, the warbird heritage is maintained by both museums and private owners. As in the past, men and women keep these beautiful aircraft flying by using the same principal- hard work. Restoration, keeping engines in top condition, airframe maintenance, and training are costly and an endless task. When you see these aircraft in the air or on display, remember their heritage and all the people that made it possible.
